Meet Navy Veteran and Team Leader, Michael Simmons

Michael Simmons, a Team Leader here at Xcellent ATL, began his career here just moments before a global shutdown. The twenty-two-year-old entrepreneur joined the team in February of this year, and is wrapping up the year with just as much enthusiasm and drive as his first day. The Atlanta native always dreamt of becoming a business owner and professional boxer.

After graduating from high school, Simmons joined the US Navy, an experience to which he credits all of his success. “I am a very proud Navy veteran,” says Simmons, “it was the greatest experience of my life. I earned lifelong friends and the mental resilience that I didn’t have before. As a junior recruit, you have to prove yourself. You have to prove that you have a strong mind, an ability to adapt and be an asset to a team. Active duty taught me to wait, take a breath, take a moment, and think. I learned to do my part on a team and have integrity. I learned that everything comes to light, so do your best today.” It’s no secret that active duty can be one of the most challenging situations mentally, physically, and spiritually. How did he get through it? What is his advice to others in his shoes? “Fight your mind; it will stop you to protect you — that’s survival. Work with what you have until you get more. Don’t overthink but be ready for life’s curveballs. Your actions decide your life.”

Exactly how much of this experience did Michael Simmons bring to his career here at Xcellent ATL? You gain pieces of yourself from experiences like that, and those pieces never leave you. “All of my greatest accomplishments come from my time in the Navy,” says Simmons, “I was able to travel around the world and meet so many new people, and accordingly, those social skills have helped me tremendously in this career. I am only twenty-two, and I have traveled to seven different countries; I’m proud of that.”

The natural extrovert pulls inspiration from all around him: his fellow veterans, colleagues, and mentors. Most of all, Michael Simmons is inspired by his family. “I am inspired by people who came from nothing and made their way in the world,” says Simmons, “I learned that from my parents; they are my greatest inspiration.

They taught me that success is the ability to give. I want to have everything I need, so I can be in the position to give to others.”

Michael Simmons brings so much to the Xcellent ATL team, from his drive to others’ encouragement; every part of him is an asset. “I am an extrememly hard worker and never settle for less,” says Simmons, “I strive to be the best at whatever I do. I have a strong desire to learn and grow. I am also very competitive. I think that comes from my time as a boxer before the Navy. Boxing gives you a strong desire and hunger to win.”

Where will Michael Simmons be in five years? The short answer is, anywhere. “I want to become my own boss; that is my passion,” says Simmons, “I want to be able to give, give, give. I hope to continue boxing, even on a non-competitive level. In five years, I hope to own my own clothing brand, which is something not everyone knows about me! I want to invest in homeless shelters and support small businesses and teams nationwide.” If there’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that Michael’s going to make a difference.

Understanding Your Value

Have you felt overwhelmed with all that has been happening in the world lately? If so, know that you are not alone, we feel it too. These feelings of no control can easily take over and completely consume your self-esteem. Today, we want to help you prevent that. As entrepreneurial leaders, our team here at Xcellent ATL knows first-hand the impact a weak mentality can inflict on an individual’s career and the success of a business. Although you may feel unprepared, overwhelmed, and frankly, small compared to others, you need to understand your value. You are intelligent; you are capable; you are destined for great things.

Take stock of what you bring to the table. As a leader, everything that you do impacts everyone around you. No matter where you are on your journey to success, you make a difference. Are you an extrovert that can quickly bond with others? Great! You will always be the person that your team members come to, whether they are struggling and need help or are succeeding and want to celebrate. Are you an introvert? Fantastic! You see what others don’t and can provide neutral feedback to your team members that will help them strengthen and grow their skills.

Your potential holds your value. Your worth comes down to two things: your values and the amount of knowledge that you have to share. If you worry about your role as a leader, then we suggest you maintain a student mentality. Jump at every opportunity to learn something new or to sharpen a skill that you haven’t used in a while. You are worth far more to a team or an organization if you are always at the top of your game. Only when you are committed to your self-development will others fall behind you.

Open your eyes. The world has been turned upside down. As a business leader, as a person whose actions impact others, it can be easy to let your attitude slip. Our advice – DON’T. Look around you. Look at how far your reach goes. The time to stay vigilant and self-assured is now. We aren’t suggesting that you allow your ego to take over, but we do want you to understand how much of a positive impact you make on others when you behave like an exceptional leader.

As we said earlier, it is entirely understandable to feel overwhelmed with all that is happening in the world. However, the last thing that you need to do is underestimate your value. You are a leader. You are someone that has the power to help or hinder others. The question is, which way will you sway? Will you be a positive influence that uplifts your team members, or will you allow self-doubt to consume you and allow your negative attitude to seep onto others? You are in charge of your attitude, so the choice is solely in your hands. These tips have helped our team members at Xcellent ATL stay committed to ourselves and our roles as leaders. Hopefully, they will help you do the same!

The Perks of Working in Sales at Xcellent ATL

Are you looking to enter the world of sales but are worried that you don’t know exactly what you’re getting yourself into? No worries! We’re here to enlighten you. While sales is an ever-changing and shifting industry, it is not exactly new. Sales have been a major part of the American work industry since the beginning. Now, we know that what you may be thinking — “this is just another basic nine to five job”. But, you couldn’t be further from the truth. A profession in sales is the gateway to limitless opportunity and unmatched success. Here at Xcellent ATL, we have never doubted the power of sales, but for those who waver, we are sharing a few of our favorite perks!

Sales foster personal connections. In modern society, the majority of personal and professional interactions occur behind a screen. The way we communicate is through a keyboard, stripping us of personality and human interaction. Sales shatter that. We work face-to-face in order to create deeper, personal connections. What more could a people person want?

Sales tear down barriers to success and render the concept of a corporate ladder obsolete. When you become apart of the sales industry, you are choosing to take control of your own career. Starting from the bottom can quickly shift to you thriving at the top. Our goal – turn your ten-year plan into a five-year plan!

Sales functions on the foundation of teamwork. There is a reason that many of our sales professionals are former athletes, coaches, and club members. We understand that success is built by working together. When one succeeds, we all succeed

Sales encourage travel and exploration. Do you have a passion to take to the skies and see the world? Then, why not achieve this dream while getting paid? When you enter the world of sales, you no longer have to make a choice between making money and traveling. So, if you are looking for a career that lets you escape the mundane of a typical nine to five, you may have just found your industry!

Sales encourage “big-picture” thinking. From an early age, we are taught to set big goals but as we age, those goals tend to be worn down and crushed in the professional sector. However, in sales, you are pushed to think beyond your current station and are given a plan on how to achieve your career goals!

Sales help you identify “the why”. A major perk of working in sales is that you have the chance to be motivated by goals and merit, not just money and titles. This means you are given the chance to concentrate on your passions, while knowing that you are simultaneously setting yourself up for financial success.

For those considering entrance into the sales industry, we welcome you with open arms! You have the chance to single-handedly take control of your future, while also making a positive influence in the lives of others. From all of us here at Xcellent ATL, best of luck!

Best Business Books For The Busy Millennial

We’ve heard it all before. You “don’t have time to read,” you “read too much in college,” you “read enough at work.” Well, we aren’t buying it. Here at Xcellent ATL, people constantly ask us, “how can I succeed in business?”, “how can I kickstart my career?,” “what am I doing wrong?” We have the solution. Success in business is about continuing education and constant refreshment. You simply cannot undermine the value of reading and absorbing educational content. However, we know it can be hard to find a place to start. In an effort to help, we have laid out the best business books for the busy millennial- that’s you. Start reading.

“Brotopia”

Boss-Ladies? This one is for you. Emily Chang, the host of Bloomberg Technology, dives into the world of Silicon Valley in her book. Notoriously run solely by men, Chang embarks on interviews and intensive research on the inner workings of this “boys clubs” and the future of women in technology. Without giving away the magic of this read, any women trying to make it in the professional world should give this one a try.

“Off the Clock”

For those of you who say you have no time to read, Xcellent ATL has found the perfect business book for you. Laura Vanderkam’s “Off the Clock” focuses on the struggle of time management between work and play. The cover says it all, “feel less busy while getting more done.” This is the perfect book for self-education, as well as self-bettering. Let’s be honest, we could all use help with time management.

“In Praise of Wasting Time”

This book contradicts everything we are taught to believe as millennials, in the best way possible. Alan Lightman’s book preaches the power of doing nothing. He contends that there is nothing more beneficial to the busy millennial than leaving sometime in the week or the day free. By filling every minute of every day with work, social plans, family time, or workouts, we have deprived ourselves of the power to freely think-to wonder.

“My Morning Routine”

With the rise of YouTube and “Morning Routine” videos, busy millennials have become obsessed with the idea of the perfect morning routine. The one that is the most time efficient, the most productive, while also being the most relaxing and enjoyable. This book, written by Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander, explores various morning routines shared by different people- and which are most effective. Who knows, maybe this could be the book to perfect your morning routine.

Whether it is with one of these fun reads or another, we encourage you to take a moment from your day to read. Not only does it provide you with a mental break from the physical activity of your day, but we truly believe you should never stop learning. From all of us here at Xcellent ATL, we wish you the best of luck.

Meet Margarita: Our Xcellent Account Manager

In late September our team had the pleasure of sitting down with Margarita Crespo, a talented account manager here at Xcellent ATL. Xcellent ATL is a marketing and sales firm headquartered in Atlanta, with a focus on exactly that- excellence. Margarita Crespo has been with the company since July of 2018 and has made huge strides in success in the months following her first day.

Margarita Crespo was born and raised in Chicago, until moving out of the city at the age of 25. As a child, Crespo walked the line between outgoing and social, and shy and reserved. It wasn’t until her sophomore year of high school that the account manager fully found the outgoing personality we all see today. “Before high school, I was very shy,” says Crespo, “but after getting involved in so many sports teams I became much more outgoing.” The young athlete could be found on a basketball court, a softball field, or a swimming pool at any moment of the day. “Swimming was definitely my favorite sport,” says Crespo, “I love the water, I’m a fish.” The successful businesswoman credits much of her professional confidence to those days on high school sports teams. “Being on a team at that age teaches you that you can’t do anything alone,” says Crespo, “Even as a swimmer, I would swim in that lane alone, but I couldn’t do it without my team.” Crespo also credits her professional coaching ability to those days as a young athlete.

After high school graduation, Crespo headed to Northeastern Illinois University where she would study pre-law. “After I graduated college I completely changed what I wanted with my future,” says Crespo, “I spent time working with criminal lawyers at the Chicago Bar Association, and what I saw was not what I wanted to do with my life. So I decided to get an MBA from DeVry with a focus in information systems technology.” Crespo’s next stop in her career was the classroom. The account manager spent multiple years teaching high school students and still remembers those days fondly. “I fell in love with teaching,” says Crespo, “but I wanted to get into technology, so I moved onto IT management.” Crespo has packed her years in the professional world with ample experience in multiple sectors, the businesswoman would even go on to manage a small home health company before joining the Xcellent ATL team.

Crespo started with Xcellent on July 3rd, 2018. “The team mentality of the company is what pushed me to start,” says Crespo, “there was just a true opportunity to grow. Other jobs it was more of choosing your position and where you start is where you’ll be 20 years from now, I didn’t want that. I wanted a future and I wanted growth- I knew I could find that here.” For Crespo, the cherry on top was the strong team mentality she found at Xcellent ATL. “When you have a great team there’s no reason why you won’t be successful,” says Crespo.

As for the culture at Xcellent ATL, Crespo fit in immediately. “The company revolves around the team,” says Crespo, “being part of this team makes you grow and develop as an individual, so much of what we learn in the office can be applied to our lives.” Crespo has no shortage of positive words for her team and the development culture of Xcellent ATL.

Despite Crespo’s dense and diverse professional history, her experience with the Xcellent team has not lacked lessons. “I’ve learned how to address different customer needs and different types of individuals,” says Crespo, “with everything you do you come across people, and before this job, I don’t think I knew how to have effective conversations with others. My focus now is teaching people to work at the best of their ability and learning to satisfy everyone.” As for her daily responsibilities, Crespo has harnessed her teaching ability in the office and in the field. “On a daily basis I am teaching,” says Crespo, “It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here, it matters how fast you learn, so I am constantly teaching others in the office. I am responsible for team building and helping others grow, that is my favorite thing.”

The past three months have been a whirlwind for Crespo, but she shows no signs of slowing down. “My goals are to continue helping others grow,” says Crespo, “I hope to be promoted to assistant management and beyond- if I can teach people to be better than me, I love that.” With a work ethic and determination like Margarita Crespo’s, there is no limit to success.

Xcellent ATL: A Note To All Graduates
It’s hard to believe, but in just 3 short months a wave of eager graduates will flood the stages of Atlanta with fresh faces and dreams larger than their gowns! We’re positive that panic is ensuing for most, as who REALLY knows what they want to do long-term after college, but have no fear upcoming grads! The years of all-nighters, projects with people who don’t pull their weight and the 3 or 5 times you switched your major have all prepared you for life outside of college, haha!
Though your future may be unknown, what is readily available is your level of preparation! 3 months will come fast and every article, blog, and video you watch to get ahead is definitely in your best interest. And to help, we’ve enlisted the wisdom and humor of Xcellent ATL’s CEO, Terry, to answer some questions and drop some knowledge on you!
Q – Alright, Terry! Even though you’re apart of the Crimson Tide, we’ll try not to hold that against you in this interview!
Terry – You’ve got something against Alabama?! This Q&A might be over sooner than I thought, haha!
Q – Ok, seriously! What advice do you have for someone who is graduating from college this year and trying to find their first job?
Terry – Good question. The biggest thing when I interview recent grads is I find that they limit their options to certain industries. They mention to me, “I studied accounting, so I’m only looking for an accountant position.” And while the entire goal of going to school is to utilize your education afterward, it’s important to remember that your first job outside of college might not always be the dream one. Sometimes, it’s important to keep your options open, learn new skill sets and maybe even try something out of your comfort zone that you feel will better you professionally!
Q – Are you utilizing your degree?
Terry – Not really, and that’s ok! This is what I realized after I graduated – I was good at talking to people and desired to be in a leadership or management role in the future. I knew if I found those 2 opportunities in a position than I would give it a try. I never studied marketing or sales or entrepreneurship in school, but I accepted an entry level position with growth, despite my degree, and then moved into a position where our client asked me to oversee a branch office location for them in Atlanta. I would have never been in this position now, overseeing Xcellent ATL, if it wasn’t for my lack of fear to NOT use my degree!
Q – Do you think it’s important to be really involved in school?
Terry – Yeah, I really do. What being incredibly involved shows to an employer is that you’re able to get along well with others, that you know how to manage your time and also that you’re committed. All important qualities a manager looks to have in their workforce.
Q – Favorite business mentor students should know about!
Terry – I don’t have one specific person in mind, but I would say find someone entrepreneurial minded. The reason I say that is this. Think of some of the characteristics associated with being an entrepreneur. You would probably say motivated, versatile, flexible, open-minded, driven and laden with solid communication skills. So if you had someone with a wide repertoire of both soft and hard business skills, they would probably make a balanced role model for you, right?!
Q – Ok Terry, last question! What’s your favorite business book new grads should all read!
Terry – No Excuses by Brian Tracy, all the way. That book is all about the psyche of success and how we are the only limit to our ability. If you want a book to get you pumped and not take no in your job search, this is it!
And there you have it, folks! You’re all ready to go out into the world and LAND a great first job out of school because good things come to those who work their tail ends off! Which is of course what you did in the 4, 5 or 6 years you were in school, right, haha?! As we look to fill positions within our firm’s renowned Management Training Program, Xcellent ATL looks forward to the opportunity of networking and employing some of Atlanta’s brightest new graduates! Good luck!
